I offended my husband after asking for a bigger diamond on my ring (2025)

A woman has been branded 'awful' and 'shallow' after revealing she wants an engagement ring with a bigger diamond from her husband of eight years.

The anonymous woman, believed to be from the UK, revealed her controversial opinion on Mumsnet, asking fellow members of the British parenting site for their views.

The wife shared that she had been married to her husband for eight years and at the time of their engagement the ring had been the best he could afford.

Despite saying she is ‘grateful’ for her ring and her husband’s ‘thoughtful’ proposal she said: ‘I hate to admit this… but I want a bigger diamond.’

In the post, she explained how when she addressed her feelings with her husband he had been ‘a bit offended’ and so now, she was turning to Mumsnet to see if other women had ever felt the same.

Most did not share her thoughts - a poll on the thread showed that 87 per cent of people think she is being 'unreasonable' - and felt sorry for her husband who they strongly vouched for in the comments.

One user wrote: ‘Dear God, grow up and understand what's important in a marriage. Newsflash - it's not the size of your engagement ring.’

Another added: ‘Sorry I think you've been shallow and hurtful and I don't blame him for being offended - he has every right.’

In response to a user who questioned the woman’s need to discuss the size of her engagement ring with her husband she explained that, ‘it came up in conversation due to close family getting engaged.’

The poster insisted that she had chosen her words ‘carefully’ and told her partner that she ‘appreciated and loves the ring.’

In spite of ‘His “being offended”’ the woman said this only lasted ‘for a minute’ before he understood her desire for ‘something a little bigger’ and was ‘fine with it when the time is right.’

The woman admitted that she had been comparing her engagement ring to other women’s and noticed that ‘everyone has a rock these days’ and added that ‘when I see other people’s rings I am often a bit envious.’

She likened her feelings to the same way people compare houses and cars and was ‘not proud’ of her thoughts as she is ‘not normally a "shallow" or "superficial" person.’

Many couldn't empathise with the poster’s explanation and did not hold back in showing their disagreement.

Reaction: Several Mumsnet users criticised the poster for being 'shallow' and called on her to apologise to her husband

One person said: ‘Gross. I wonder if you'll be this relaxed if he announces he's trading you in for a wife he fancies more, because "society is based on comparison". That's fine, right?’

Another wrote: 'I would want the ring that my partner chose for me, with all the nerves of proposing coursing through him, at a time he was so in love with me he wanted me to be his wife, not a status symbol'

A third person added: 'You are valuing the money value over the emotional value and you've hurt your DH.'

Others called for the woman to apologise to her husband immediately with one person saying, ‘I think if your husband is offended, even if it wasn't intentional on your part, an apology is warranted.’

A second added: ‘She needs to apologise. Not dramatic.’

Other commenters who had had engagement ring upgrades themselves gave the poster suggestions on how to sensitively handle the situation.

One person wrote: 'Lab diamonds have changed the game. I would tell DH you reconsidered and of course you want engagement ring as is.

'But it would be very nice to get a right hand ring or new band. There are lots of ways to get what you want without hurting feelings.'

Although most people did not understand the woman's desire for a ring upgrade others gave suggestions on how to best to approach the situation

Another said: 'My DH got me one with three diamonds… one for each child.'

A third shared a more cost effective way for the poster to upgrade her bling without dismissing her old ring.

They wrote: 'I had a teeny diamond ring. Got it reset into a trilogy for our 10th anniversary. I had a same size diamond in another ring and added a larger central ruby. Cost less than £500 with an independent jeweller. Worth considering?'

Despite the controversy that the post has caused between Mumsnet users the woman said her and her husband have planned ‘a beautiful upgrade for our ten year anniversary,’ and is ‘delighted with the plan.’
